Getting Around Curacao

Curacao has some fantastic beaches and bays along its south western coast which offer visitors some of the best diving and snorkelling in the world. The island also has an exciting, wild and rugged north east coastline. The capital, Willemstad, is a fascinating and interesting city. a UNESCO heritage site with over 700 listed buildings. All this, in such a small area, makes it easy to explore - and enjoy. We have travelled around the island, many times, in almost every mode of transport you can name. It's a safe island and easy to get around. More importantly it is well worth exploring the island's natural world, on land and sea, as well as its complex and intriguing heritage.

Curacao is a small, interesting island – lots to see and do and easy to get out and about.
Hiring a vehicle gives you freedom to explore this fascinating island at your own pace –
and to enjoy the secluded bays and beaches and the wonderful reef along the coast.
A perfect way to enjoy the historic capital, go sightseeing, snorkelling or shore diving.

Airport Transfers

Probably the first mode of transport you'll use !  We can arrange a transfer with our transfer company on the island. They'll meet you at the airport and take you to your accommodation. Usually that will take less than 20 minutes. It is a small terminal and they haven't lost anyone yet. On your travel documents there will be a number to call, just in case. The return transfer can be arranged with the driver.

Hiring a Vehicle

We recommend hiring a vehicle so you can enjoy the shore diving, explore the island and other activities. Hiring is not expensive. On Curacao you are never more than 40 minutes from your resort or 10 minutes from the ocean. Curaçao is a small island and well worth exploring. It has a huge number of excellent shore diving sites. Hiring a vehicle is very popular - almost a "must" for divers. You can explore the island at your own pace and get into the historic capital, Willemstad, to enjoy some sightseeing and nightlife.

You can collect - and return - your hire vehicle at the airport. This gives you flexibility and freedom for whatever you choose to do. Combined with the diving freedom of  shore diving, it means you can come and go, and plunge, whenever you want. You may wish to arrange a transfer and have the vehicle delivered the next day - not a problem - we can do that for you.  Our vehicle hire company has offices around the island

We can easily include a hire vehicle in your holiday itinerary for all or part of your holiday, you may want to hire for just a couple of days. If you are booking one of our fantastic DDD packages - designed for snorkellers and divers (not to mention explorers) - the vehicle we would include "as standard" is the Nissan Frontier pick up. Functional and spacious - and air conditioned. There are other vehicles available, small mini cars up to more luxurious 4X4s and people carriers. The pick up is our "standard" because it suits so many peoples' requirements. The pick up has a double air-conditioned passenger cab - which seats five people comfortably. The pick up rear section is practical for all sorts of kit and equipment. The tail gate is handy for sitting on to kit up - and essential after the dive. The pick ups are popular and the best value for money. The choice of vehicle is always yours. Let us know if you would prefer a different type of vehicle.

NB: when comparing prices please be careful. As with so many other things in the travel world - taxes and surcharges are often not included prices on websites. It is standard practice for resorts and travel companies to quote hire prices - without the insurance!  A nasty shock when it is demanded when you arrive on Curacao to start your holiday!   We do not work like that - our prices include all taxes and CDW cover as standard. No hidden extras !

We can include vehicle hire in your holiday itinerary - which is covered by our ATOL licence. Booking with us means it will be a little cheaper - with a reputable hire company - and the vehicle will be ready for you when you want it.

Bikes

Not just for the athletic ! The island is relatively flat - just a couple of hills inland. The coast road is completely flat and a great ride, particularly on the wildside, the north east coast, which is virtually uninhabited and has some great rock formations - especially the dramatic blow holes which blast water up to 15 metres in the air. Great for wildlife too. There are several companies hiring good quality bikes - and we can arrange that for you. Traffic, outside the capital is light and in Willemstad it's a nice ride around a UNESCO heritage site with all its old, colourful buildings. Inland there are some rugged paths for the more adventurous or those who want to get a bit closer to nature. Riding around the national park is a great way to enjoy the flora and fauna.

Taxis
Lots of taxis on Curaçao. If you want one from your accommodation - ask them – they'll know the best taxi service to use. Most taxis have meters with fixed rates. But it's always best to agree a price for the trip in advance. Much the same as the UK. There are taxi ranks around Willemstad and the airport.
Buses
Curaçao has a number of buses - usually coaches or min buses. All licensed with a regulated fare structure. The bus service is remarkably reliable . But you are on holiday - and on island time - so it doesn't much matter as long as you get to where you are going.

Walking
Getting around the capital on foot is easily the best way to see this fascinating city. Lots of small alleyways and streets, with some breathtaking buildings. The old synagogue is one to visit. It's a safe island, so you won't be hassled and pestered. Outside the capital the island is undeveloped and has a large wilderness style park - Christoffel Park - with lots of hiking trails. The coast road is very flat an easy walk  alongside the beautiful, blue Caribbean sea. Lots of recreational walks, to see the sights, enjoy nature or just stretch your legs.
Tours
There are lots of excursions by road and sea- all great ways to see and explore Curacao.  Most will have special topics of course, island tours, the Christoffel Park (national park), bird watching, cave exploration and various attractions around the island. Curaçao is not a big island, so this does not involve hours on a coach., Most journeys take less than 30 minutes. All great ways to get out and about and see the island. We can let you have more details if you wish. As you would expect on and island , numerous boat trips. Sunset cruises, snorkelling trips, or just lazy days drifting along the coast. Most boats will have refreshments and stop in secluded bays to do some snorkelling, so always take your swim stuff with you !  Not expensive and great fun and always a great way to see any place - from the ocean.
